A walk out to the airstrip

Lots of puppies in the fall; not so many come winter. Parvo is very common. This area can be a rough place for a dog. Most households do have one, some even a few. In this village, there are two dog lots for sled teams. One is active, meaning training for racing, the other may go out occasionally. Having visited that household numerous times, the elderly gentleman has a wall full of trophies that he has won in the past.

What is surprising are the number of little short legged, scruffy, hounds running around. These are not chained up and can make a lot of noise to let you know they are there. I lovingly call them, rat dogs.

This photo is what I think is typical of the area.

Eli and Dorothy, new to teaching, new to the area.

One of many steam houses.
Lots of sand to play with out at the airstrip which  has been built up by several feet. The elevation of Atmautluak is considered 17 feet, but that is taken at the airstrip....so not sure what Atmau really is, maybe three feet? That's what our GPS says.
