Late October - Freeze Up in a Week

This was one week later after the Nunapitchuk adventure. We had hoped for another chance at the restaurant, but no go. Edges of river began to freeze.

Next day. The community got together and began pulling everyone's boats out of the water. They either were brought up and towed by four-wheelers to be near homes, or just hauled up to high ground by a group.

Sections of ice would break off from the edges of upriver and float down connecting with other pieces.

Eventually, enough connected to make it's way across.

Ducks walking on ice....

Then two weeks later, it warms up. This is a very dangerous time. No one was lost this year, but last year a father with two daughters were lost when their snowmobile broke through the ice.
