Fuel Tank Farms

Much of the health class was focused on having the students find out more about their surroundings. This led to learning about their own fuel tank farm in Atmautluak. We went over to the Tribal Offices to interview Harry Gilman who has been overseeing this "farm" for 30 years. Each student had a question to ask, but as it turned out most became very shy and could only look down or away.

We eventually found out that all of the stove fuel, diesel, and gas is barged in from Bethel. It gets pumped from the barge through these pipes out to the tanks which are about a quarter of a mile away from the river. There are 25000, 10000, and 5000 gallon tanks that get pumped one foot short of full. There are 18 tanks with the deck as a secondary containment.

Stove fuel costs $5.40 a gallon. Gas costs $6.88 a gallon.
