King Island Dancers



 The King Island dancers were the last group I stayed for. Their style is different from the Central Yup'ik dancers. When they go up to dance they put on gloves, either holding them or wearing them. Another difference is the men usually stand when they dance. In the Yup'ik style men either sit flat, legs out, or cross legged, or kneeling.



 This group was the only one to perform with masks. This woman is sorting them out to put on stage.


This woman got up and began a slow dance. Note the gloves in her hand. Another difference for this group are their skin boots. They are made of caribou with walrus bottoms. Also, these folks have their traditional drums made of skin.









 



 

This boy did the walrus dance. Kind of looks like a grumpy walrus...
