Ice Fishing

This is an example of a set net under the ice. It is checked often. There are photos from last year that show the owners pulling up the net from one side, untangling the fish (gills) from the net, and pulling from the other side to get the net back in place.

Manuq'ing. During the day, people chop a hole and jig for Northern Pike when they are coming upriver. During the night people are out for Lusch. People us different sticks, lines, and lures. Something shiny like foil is common.

Bruce was invited to go and check a blackfish trap with a family here. The father chipped into the ice and pulled up a wooded trap that had been placed in the slower moving section of the river.

This is an extremely large example. Normally they are about half this size and very dark. We took the fish into the 3rd grade classroom and they used it for a few days writing descriptions and a report, then went into an imaginary one after that. Very fun!
