Alaska summer highlights #3

While in the local coffee shop in Seward, we read about a young mushing couple that lived in the area. We contacted them and were able to stop by and be one of their first "official customers" as they were beginning a new business.

Travis and Sarah run the Turning Heads Kennel. They are both mushers, but this summer Travis signed up for his first Iditarod and will be running the 2013 race as a rookie.

We were taken on a tour of their dog lot, and then Travis shared how he takes care of his dogs on the run.

He dressed up his runner telling us what all the gear was for. He also showed us how he cooks food for his team and how his sled is used.

Then, of course there were the puppies. We saw pups from one week old to several months old.

This was a new addition to the training scene.

As soon as one dog was taken out of the lot, the entire area erupted into "pick me, pick me" barking. Sarah and Travis hitched up 12 or 14 dogs (can't remember, but a lot!).

Then we were off gee'ing and haw'ing around their property. What a blast!

Hopefully if you end up in Seward give the Turning Heads Kennel a call for a Summer Dog Mushing adventure. Or, keep an ear out for Travis in this year's Iditarod. We are hoping to see them in Bethel this year for the K300!

  1. LIked the Seward kennel visit. He really gave you a personal tour including the equipment. They usually don't do that! We will watch for him this winter.

Hope you are getting into the "groove".

    Be well.
